GUEST squad Lyceum survived a late University of Perpetual Help System Dalta uprising in the last six minutes to hammer out a 93-87 win and snatch the early lead in the NCAA seniors basketball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Pirates saw the Altas misfire their five field goal attempts in the final minute to preserve their second straight victory.
Lyceum followed up its 75-63 triumph over College of Saint Benilde last Monday.
“It has been a blessing na natapat kami sa magandang schedule. I expected na lalaban ang Perpetual Help since ayaw nilang matalo sa guest team,” said Pirates coach Bonnie Tan.
“Kinabahan kami kasi first televised game namin ito, down kami ng 13 points early in the game at sinabi ko sa mga bata sa halftime na it will take four quarters to win the game,” he added.
After trailing 1-14 early in the game, Kevin Lacap waxed hot by scoring eight quarters in the third period as Lyceum took a 73-65 advantage entering the kalamangan sa pagpasok ng payoff period.
The Pirates posted their biggest lead of the game, 83-69, after Chris Cayabyab buried a trey when Justine Alano and Anthony Paulino combined forces for the Altas to move closer to 87-91, with 1:16 remaining.
Cayabyab and Rich Guevarra had 17 and 14 points, respectively, while Allan Santos registered his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Lyceum.
Jet Vidal had 17 points, 10 boards, three assists and two steals, while Alano and Paulino chipped in 13 markers apiece for Perpetual Help.
The Altas went down to their second straight defeat.
